New York City. The Big Apple. The Concrete Jungle. This is one of the largest cities in the world and an incredible place that so many people want to visit. Thanks to the romanticizing of NYC in movies and TV shows, so many people look forward to moving to Manhattan to follow a wide array of dreams. This can be one of the most exciting journeys of your life, and it can also come with some complications.

As you prepare to move to the Big Apple, it’s important to know the facts. Understand how your life will look different in the city that never sleeps. Especially if you are coming from a small town or a low-cost area, moving to New York may be a bit of a wake-up call. But with the right attitude and determination, you will be able to create a life you love in the city. Here are just a few things you should know about the new ways of life that await you in NYC.

Get used to smaller spaces at higher prices.

The biggest things to prepare for in New York City are the insane prices. While minimum wage is much higher, you’re going to end up spending a lot more than you’re used to on your cost of living. Real estate prices are perhaps the biggest example of this.

Looking at mortgage options in New York means seeing higher loan terms and a lot of cash needed on the road to homeownership. Even if you’re renting, you’ll be spending thousands in monthly payments unless you find a roommate to bunk up with. With so many people crammed into the city, you’ll be paying these high prices for spaces that are smaller than you’re used to. Be mentally and physically prepared for the adjustments.

Create a homey feel in your apartment with great flooring.

Just because you’re living in a smaller space, doesn’t mean you can’t make it homey and beautiful. Treat yourself to some great flooring. From stain-resistant carpet to LVP flooring, you can find the perfect style for your home. Plum carpets can help you every step of the way to create a great design that gives you your own sanctuary within the hustle and bustle of New York City.

NYC is huge and there are many neighborhoods to explore.

One thing to know is that NYC is massive. There are dozens of distinct neighborhoods you’ll want to explore to find the best place for you to live. From boroughs like Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx, you’ll want to explore all the different vibes to find your perfect corner of the city.

    Take advantage of public transportation.

Owning a car is a pretty silly thing to do if you’re living and working in New York. It’s expensive to park and keep at your property. Plus, NYC has an incredibly extensive public transportation system. With subways that can take you to every corner of the island and a bus system for anywhere else, you need to go, you can buy a monthly pass at a lower cost and enjoy unlimited rides around the city.

Establish your routine within the city.

Moving to a big city can seem intimidating, at first. This is especially true when you are surrounded by other New Yorkers who may come across as brash and rude when they’re just trying to get where they’re going. The key to fitting in and establishing yourself in the city is to set a routine. Find your people and the activities that you enjoy. Commit to your normal route to and from work. Get to know your specific neighborhood. When you build that routine, NYC will feel like home in no time.
