Types of Building Structures

There are many different types of building structures in the world. Some are very simple, while others are much more complex. The type of structure that is right for a particular building depends on many factors, including the purpose of the building, the climate, the environment, and the available resources.

1. Wood frame buildings

These are some of the most common types of structures in North America. They are made from wooden framing members (studs, joists, and rafters) covered with sheathing (plywood or OSB). Wood frame buildings are typically lightweight and easy to construct.

The advantages of wooden frame construction include that the materials are renewable, the expenses are modest, and the structures may be built quickly using basic tools. Certainly, there are drawbacks to wooden frame building, including the fact that it is combustible, susceptible to deterioration due to exposure to weather conditions, and not being strong enough to withstand tornadoes’ and hurricanes’ winds.

2. Steel frame buildings

These buildings are made from steel members (beams, columns, and trusses). Steel frame buildings are very strong and can support a lot of weight. They are often used in high-rise construction.

Steel frame has many advantages–it’s strong, versatile for assembling, easy to weld which makes construction faster, and all the components are readily available. Perfect for areas that experience natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes often, this material can also be recycled and reused again in the future. The only disadvantages of steel frames are that it’s prone to corrosion in places with high humidity and if temperatures exceed five hundred degrees Fahrenheit, the steel will lose its strength.

3. Reinforced concrete buildings

These buildings are made from concrete that has been reinforced with steel rebar or mesh. Reinforced concrete structures are very strong and resistant to fire and weather damage.

One of the benefits to having a concrete frame building is that recycled steel can be used for reinforcement throughout. Also, since concrete can be sourced locally, you have more control over the shape and find it easier to fulfill quirky requests. Of course, as mentioned before, working with concrete takes up more time than other materials Therefore, if your construction site is in an area with a history of earthquakes, extra engineering might be necessary.

4. Pre-engineered

With pre-engineered buildings, you often get a quicker turnaround time and can begin using the building sooner than expected. You work with a company to design the building specifications, and then they take care of creating and shipping the pieces to be put together onsite.

Pre-engineered buildings are faster and easier to construct, stronger, and more customizable than other types of buildings. However, they come at a greater cost and you must work within certain limits in terms of design.
